Someone will know the answer to this. There was a movie serial made in the forties or fifties. One chapter ended with the hero — a human being, not a super-hero — being catapulted into the sky and (seemingly) certain death. For this shot, the serial switched from live-action to rather obvious animation that the producers thought we would think was live-action.
