On December 19, 1985, a fellow named David Tolley attended a taping of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on which the famed pianist Horatio Gutierrez was to have been the musical guest. Gutierrez cancelled out at the last minute due to an injury so Mr. Carson asked if there was anyone in the studio audience who played piano and would like to come down and fill in. He wound up bringing Tolley down to perform…and this was not a set-up. Tolley was not an audience "plant" but he turned out to be a fine musician who has since gone on to a pretty good career.
